New York City Celebrates the 10th Annual National Voter Registration Day

09/20/2022

Today community organizations across New York City will host more than 50 voter registration drives to celebrate the 10th Annual National Voter Registration Day. The goal is to help all eligible New Yorkers get registered to vote in the midterm elections in November.

We estimate that more than 78,000 city residents will turn 18 this year and become eligible to vote. Here's how that estimate breaks down by borough:

  • 18,000 in The Bronx
  • 23,000 in Brooklyn
  • 13,000 in Manhattan
  • 19,000 in Queens
  • 5,000 in Staten Island

"In this exciting mid-term election year, new voters have a great opportunity to get involved at a critical point in New York City's political life," said Amy Loprest, Executive Director of the NYC Campaign Finance Board. "We are thrilled to be working with many of the same stellar community organizations that we partnered with for the first National Voter Registration Day back in 2012. Now that we are holding these events in person again, let's make it the best NVRD ever and help get New Yorkers to the polls in November."

"It's crucial in this moment for New Yorkers to stand up," said New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. "To make their voices heard, to make their vote count, to help make our government reflective of and responsive to the needs of our communities. On National Voter Registration Day, we are called not only to make sure that each of us vote ourselves, but that we get resources and the registration opportunities to communities across our city. Our government has a responsibility to make both registration and voting as accessible as possible for all neighborhoods. Each of us then has a responsibility to use our vote to shape our government."

“At the Civic Engagement Commission, we love creative collaborations that promote civic participation, and we are thrilled to celebrate National Voter Registration Day with our partners to encourage nonpartisan voter engagement,” said Dr. Sarah Sayeed, Chair & Executive Director of the Civic Engagement Commission (CEC). “The CEC remains committed to working with diverse stakeholders across the five boroughs to get out the vote and educate New Yorkers about what they can expect to see on the upcoming ballot.”

"The 10th anniversary of National Voter Registration Day celebrates a cornerstone of our democracy: Power is derived from the people. College students working with NYPIRG are excited to celebrate by registering thousands of voters on CUNY, SUNY, and private college campuses today and reminding their peers how vital they are to the functioning of our democracy," said Megan Ahearn, NYPIRG Program Director.

“On National Voter Registration Day we help our patrons register to vote as they take this important first step in the democratic process. We are proud to serve as a thriving center for civic engagement, where all Brooklynites can access the resources they need to make informed decisions and have their voices heard," said Linda E. Johnson, President and CEO, Brooklyn Public Library.

"As an institution that serves everyone—regardless of background or circumstance—The New York Public Library brings communities together to engage in open and free discussion, collaboration, and civic engagement," said Anthony W. Marx, President of The New York Public Library. "For over a century, we have provided access to information and knowledge with resources that educate and empower people to advocate for themselves. Participating in Voter Registration Day is a powerful next step in the Library's mission, to ensure New Yorkers can fully take part and contribute to our great city by exercising their right to vote."

“Given our reach and mission to provide access to knowledge and opportunity to all, public libraries are uniquely positioned to serve as platforms for civic engagement,” said Queens Public Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott. “We are excited to partner with the New York City Campaign Finance Board again to provide people with the information and assistance they need to exercise their right to be heard at the ballot box.”

“For the sixth year in a row, the YMCA of Greater New York is pleased to partner with civic engagement organizations citywide for National Voter Registration Day,” said Sharon Greenberger, President & CEO of the YMCA of Greater New York. “Nearly all of our branches citywide will offer voter registration this year, because the Y understands that communities are stronger when all New Yorkers make their voices heard.”

"When we vote, we make our voices heard," said Eddie Cuesta, Executive Director of Dominicanos USA (DUSA) "With the general election approaching in November, National Voter Registration Day is the perfect way to kickstart the mobilization of our community. DUSA is proud to partner with other civic engagement organizations citywide for National Voter Registration Day to celebrate democracy and motivate our fellow citizens to participate in the electoral process."

"I can think of no better way to celebrate "National Voter Registration Day 2022" registering potential new voters. With so many rights under attack these days, it becomes imperative that we organize, educate and activate a whole new generation of voters," said Hassan Bakiriddin, President of the Unified Political Association.

"Woodside on the Move is proud to partner with NYC Votes in registering our community members to vote,” said Adriana Beltran-Morelli, Deputy Director of Woodside on the Move. We hope that all New Yorkers will exercise their right to vote and have their voices heard this upcoming November!"

"We are in the midst of a climate catastrophe, and we need our elected officials to lead us in assuring future generations have a sustainable planet," said Mark Laster, Co-Chair of the Forest Hills Green Team. "Voting is one way all of us can assure we elect leaders with a vision to deal with climate change. The Green Team will hold a voter registration drive on Sunday, September 25, at the Compost-Pa-Looza event at the Queens Botanical Garden."
