Any candidate who participates in the matching funds program is required to participate in each debate for which they are eligible. The Debate Program, launched in 1997, calls for two debates prior to each citywide election to provide voters with the opportunity to compare candidates side-by-side. The citywide Debate program is a core component of NYC Votes, the CFB’s nonpartisan voter engagement campaign. The CFB administers the Debate Program, and individual debates are sponsored by media outlets, civic groups, and academic institutions in order to reach as wide and diverse an audience as possible. The Board selected the sponsors after a thorough, competitive process.

"Public, televised debates are a cornerstone of New York City's public matching funds program, which empowers voters to take ownership of their elections and their government," said Frederick Schaffer, Chair, NYC Campaign Finance Board. "I want to thank all of the sponsors of these Public Advocate general election debates for their commitment to our city and to producing smart engaging events that will help voters cast an informed ballot on Election Day."

"We look forward to continuing to work with the Campaign Finance Board to produce and televise debates in the race for Public Advocate. The debates will allow New Yorkers to hear from the candidates on key issues facing our city and will empower voters to make informed decisions at the polls,” said Dan Ronayne, Senior Vice President at Spectrum News NY1 and Spectrum Noticias NY1.

“As we approach this election season, the NYC League is grateful to co-sponsor the Public Advocate debate program and support voters through ongoing education and general information. This includes registration, poll site information and bios on ballot candidates. Televised debates with local partners are a great opportunity to highlight voter choice, irrespective of party affiliation,” said Crystal Joseph, Vice President, League of Women Voters of the City of New York.

“The NAACP New York State Conference Metropolitan Council promotes educated voters and voter turnout. It is important that voters that go to the polls know as much as they can about the candidates on the ballot to make the best choice for the future of their city and community. Through the debate process we bring that information to all voters,” said Dr. Hazel Dukes, President of the NAACP New York State Conference.  “The NAACP and the NAACP New York State Conference Metropolitan Council have 110 years of experience in voter advocacy and, with our partners, we continue in the legacy of the NAACP in getting out the vote.”

“The Latino Leadership Institute Inc. is once again, proud to co-sponsor a prime time televised debate (our 6th televised debate) in order to provide the best forum possible to all New York City residents to evaluate the platforms of each of the candidates for the office of Public Advocate. Thus, contributing to solidify the democratic process in New York City," said Jaime Estades, Founder of the Latino Leadership Institute

NYC Votes is the nonpartisan voter engagement initiative of the New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) and its Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC). In addition to promoting voter registration, participation, and civic engagement in New York City through its many programs and partnerships, NYC Votes sponsors the city’s official Debate Program and produces the citywide Voter Guide.
