1. What is the most important issue in Council District 4 you would address if elected?

I would continue my fight to reduce school overcrowding and to push the Department of Education to develop a more practical process for new school construction. Since I was elected, we have already added classroom capacity - by opening a new P.S. 151 and rezoning the former Con Edison Waterside site to include a much-needed school. I will keep up the fight to eliminate wait lists, restore art rooms and science labs to their intended purpose and strengthen funding for neighborhood schools.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

It is more critical than ever to stand up for middle-class families, who are the backbone of our economy. That means ensuring that police, sanitation and other essential services are shielded from budget cuts, preserving affordable housing and protecting tenants from harassment, and creating jobs through investments in our infrastructure. Despite our economic challenges, I will work hard to avoid putting new burdens on New Yorkers. We must also plan for a more sustainable future, which is why I will build on my record of promoting alternative energy and the development of "green" buildings.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

I have spent four years fighting for the interests of this district, and I have a deep understanding of the individual challenges and opportunities on every block. I have set up a skilled constituent service operation, which is accessible, high-tech, and delivers results. I have established a strong legislative record, including passing laws to protect tenants from harassment, to defend our environment, to protect a woman's right to choose, and to reform the budget and campaign finance system.
