1. What is the most important issue in Council District 4 you would address if elected?

As a Councilmember, I will continue to be a forceful advocate for fair funding of New York City public schools, as I have been as a lawyer on the Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit. Fairness in funding will allow us to significantly reduce class sizes, to build new schools, and to repair the ones we have. I will continue to fight for high academic standards and accountability because our children – and our City – deserve better.

 

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

As a tenants’ leader and someone who grew up in a rent-regulated apartment in New York City, I know the value of affordable housing. I will fight to strengthen rent-stabilization laws and to increase the number of new affordable units. I will also work to ensure responsible development of the Con Edison Waterside Plant on East 38th Street. I will continue to stand up for a full-length Second Avenue Subway line and for smart transportation alternatives such as Bus Rapid Transit in the interim.

 

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

My East Side community roots, my independence, and breadth of experience make me the most qualified candidate in this race. Born and raised in Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village, I have fought for the extension of rent regulations and founded the Market Rate Residents Network to oppose the electronic keycard system in that community. I will be a fiercely independent voice in the Council and will provide professional – and responsive – constituent services on a full-time basis. As a lawyer, I have litigated for fair funding of public schools, for marriage equality for gays and lesbians in New York, and for a living wage. I believe serving my East Side neighbors on the Council is a natural extension of my experience, independence and roots here, and I hope to have your support.
