Guide to the Presidential Primary Election – Tuesday, April 19, 2016

Are you ready to vote in New York’s presidential primary? Learn about the candidates who will be on the ballot Tuesday, April 19th. Learn what the ballots will look like and what you should do to cast a vote that counts here.

NYC voters registered in the Democratic or Republican Party will cast a ballot to select their candidate for president. Democratic Party members will also choose their delegates for the Democratic National Convention. These are closed primaries, which means you must be a member of the political party and you must have enrolled in that party by the deadline to be eligible to vote in that party’s primary. The Campaign Finance Board has partnered with MapLight to bring you information about the candidates in these races through its Voter’s Edge NY online voter guide. MapLight is a nonpartisan research organization that reveals money’s influence on politics, and Voter’s Edge was initially launched to shine a light on the funders behind ballot measures in California. It has since expanded to provide comprehensive coverage on federal, state, and local elections in California, Illinois, and New York.

Guide to State Assembly Special Elections

There will also be special elections in Assembly District 59 (Brooklyn), Assembly District 62 (Staten Island), and Assembly District 65 (Lower Manhattan). All voters who live in those districts can cast a vote for a new Assembly Member to fill the vacant seat in their district. You do not need to belong to any political party to vote in the state special election. These races are also covered in the Voter’s Edge NY guide.
