What is the most important issue in Council District 9 you would address if elected?

Housing is the number one issue affecting Harlem, including affordable rentals, ownership, and the privatization of NYCHA properties.

What other important issues would you address if elected?

Quality of life issues
Strengthening our schools
Supporting local business
Creating a legacy housing ownership program to allow native Harlem residents (21-35) to live and own in the community where they were raised.

What makes you the best candidate for this office?

One of the benefits of electing me is that I traverse the world of both the worker and the legislature. I know what it is to work hard every day — not much is harder than cleaning NYC train stations for 20 years. And I know what it is to work hard to advance legislation that protects the working person. Passing legislation takes coalition building and getting consensus, two things I am an expert in. I have a proven track record for getting things done at both the city and state level. Because I have been in your shoes, I bring a perspective to crafting bills no other person in this race does.

THE OFFICE OF CITY COUNCIL MEMBER

The City Council is the legislative, or law-making, branch of New York City’s government. The City Council is responsible for passing local laws, making decisions about land use, overseeing city agencies, and approving the city’s budget. Each Council member represents one of the 51 New York City Council districts. Council members receive an annual base salary of $148,500.

The winner of the February 14 election will fill the seat through the end of the 2017 calendar year. A primary and general election will be held this fall to fill the seat for a full four-year term starting in January 2018.
