If you marched against war, prayed to stop the war, or feel lied to by your government about the war - now you can register a clear vote: No to War! Bring the troops home now!
War is a local issue. The billions of dollars spent every week on the occupation of Iraq should instead be spent on education, improving public health, protecting our environment and enriching our cultural life.
My campaign also seeks to highlight what’s happening here at home. September 11 should have been a moment when New York began to reinvent itself but - shamefully - we remain the most unequal state in the union. Since 1992, the State has lost $11 billion each year as a result of tax breaks that mainly benefited the well off, and the City has lost $4 billion each year for the same reason.
The City needs more revenue to ease it’s budget problems. Therefore I support higher taxes on corporations and the very rich, the reintroduction of the stock transfer tax, and for making wealthy tax-exempt private universities and foundations pay for the services they use.
The Council’s power to generate revenue, however, is limited. But a united Council can help mobilize people in a way that can build considerable pressure for change. We need a mass street-level campaign to pressure the Federal government to deliver on its post-9/11 aid promises.
I encourage you to become involved in my campaign and to join the Green Party, which is the only viable national third party that’s free of corporate money and influence.
