The only candidate born and raised in Red Hook and Sunset Park, George grew up
in a single-parent family on public assistance. A product of public education,
he was the first in his family to graduate high school and go on to college. He
earned an honor’s degree from Brooklyn College and a Ph.D. fellowship to the
CUNY Graduate Center. George has founded a non-profit organization, taught
political science at Hunter College and Pace University, and led PAL’s Citywide
Summer Reading Program which promotes literacy to over 32,000 NYC kids a day.
In 2002, George was named Red Eye Magazine Hip Hop Grassroots Activist of the
Year and received the Union Square’s 2002 Grassroots Activist Award. He is the
newly elected Democratic District Leader for the 51st Assembly District,
replacing Angel Rodriguez who resigned after pleading guilty
to federal bribery charges.
In 2001, George was the only Democrat bold enough to challenge Rodriguez in the
race for City Council. He ran a hard, progressive-minded campaign based solely
on the issues, garnering more votes than any Independent Democrat in the
history of the 38th District.
"As Councilman, I will:
- Reinvest in our public education by encouraging classroom innovation,
funding after school programs, and widening community access to
CUNY.
- Promote responsible economic and community development by fighting for
affordable housing and growth of business and jobs along the waterfront in
Sunset Park and Red Hook.
- Work for environmental justice by promoting conservation, new
technologies, and standing firm against power plants and waste transfer
stations in Sunset Park, Red Hook, and South Slope.
- End the politics of personal gain and set a new standard
for political leadership based on community input and empowerment.
- Serve with a relentless energy to restore trust between our community
and our elected officials."
