22nd City Council District

1. What is the most important issue in Council District 22 you would address if elected?

If elected to City Council, I would hold monthly public meetings in different parts of the District to get the input of the people who live here. In the long run, I would like to see the entire city move to a system of elected "Community Councils" to replace the current appointed Community Boards. The Community Councils should have the power to help make local laws, to review budgets and operations of City agencies, and to investigate cases of official corruption and conflict of interest.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

Crucial issues for the city include:

---Raising income tax 1% on New York City residents who earn more than $500,000 a year, and rolling back the recent 0.5% increase in the sales tax

---Giving much more representation to tenants on the Rent Guidelines Board

---Supporting the right of same-sex couples to marry

---Granting documented non-citizens the right to vote in local elections

---Reversing the Mayor's and the City Council's completely undemocratic repeal of the term limits law

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

I have been proposing many kinds of fundamental changes since I first ran for City Council in 2001. I am more ready than ever to take up the challenge of making New York a more tolerant, democratic, and humane place to live.
