1. What is the most important issue in Council District 22 you would address if elected?
Public safety: As Public Safety Committee Chair I have led the fight to stop cuts to the NYPD. I introduced legislation to keep illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of domestic violence offenders; to abolish the statute of limitations on child abuse offenders and rapists; and to make our anti-graffiti laws the toughest in the country.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Education: I wrote the law that put security cameras in all NYC public schools. I am a sponsor of legislation which would require the NYCDOE to provide security measures for nonpublic schools, which would allow schoolchildren to carry cellular phones for safety purposes. I have given millions of dollars to local schools to improve facilities, install computers and ensure that afterschool programming serves the children. Environment: As Pro Bono Counsel to C.H.O.K.E. (Coalition Helping Organize a Kleaner Environment), I led the fight against the proliferation of power plants and represented C.H.O.K.E. and Astoria residents in court, winning a major victory against the New York Power Authority that lead to the closing of the Charles Poletti Power Plant in 2010, the worst polluter in the city. I also wrote the landmark Plastic Bag Recycling Act, which established film and plastic bag recycling in NYC. Economy: I voted against the recent elimination of the 8% property tax rollback which I fought so hard for in 2007 and will continue the fight to decrease property taxes.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
My record stands for itself as you can see from the considerable amount of legislation I have written and passed and my clear commitment to District 22 and all of NYC.
