39th City Council District

1. What is the most important issue in Council District 39 you would address if elected?

As the only public school parent in the race - endorsed by over a dozens current and former PTA presidents - I am committed to making public education work for all kids. We need to focus on teaching over testing, give parents a stronger voice, find more classroom space, and protect schools from budget cuts. I will work to make our schools models of sustainability, and keep CUNY strong.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

The City Council has the power to preserve and strengthen the quality of life of the neighborhoods we love. It's time we used it - by giving communities a real voice in the planning process, preventing overdevelopment, supporting small businesses, and preserving the diversity that makes our neighborhoods special. Right now, the system works for developers but leaves out community residents. I have worked at the grassroots level to build livable communities in Brooklyn - fighting out-of-scale development, creating new community centers, and passing a responsible contractor policy. I will work to revitalize our local economy, through a small business tax credit and "shop local" campaign, strengthen local manufacturing, support freelancers, and bring the next generation of green jobs to Brooklyn.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

I have the strongest record of results on the issues that matter in our community. My work has helped over 2500 families find and stay in affordable homes; revitalized 5th Avenue; supported dozens of small businesses; and helped thousands of people find good jobs. I helped pioneer innovative public transportation, housing, and sustainability initiatives, and led efforts to pass legislation that rolled back giveaways to developers.
